Activated alumina defluoridation

Activated alumina is used for removing fluoride from drinking water.
Strong adsorption ability.

Defluoridation agent:
Activated alumina
is also widely used to remove fluoride from drinking water. In the US, there are widespread programs to
fluoridate drinking water. However, in certain regions, such as the Jaipur region of India, there is enough fluorine in the
water to cause fluorosis. Activated alumina filters can easily reduce fluoride levels from .5 ppm to less than .1 ppm. The
amount of fluoride leached from the water being filtered depends on how long the water is actually touching the alumina
filter media. Basically, the more alumina in the filter, the less fluoride will be in the final, filtered water. Lower
temperature water, and lower pH water (acidic water) are filtered more effectively too.
Activated Aluminas are synthetically produced amorphous oxides from aluminum trihydrate. The end product is a beaded material
or powder with highly adsorptive capabilities. It is used as a Claus Catalyst in natural gas and refining and can reduce the
dewpoint of the air to -40C. Special grades can reduce the dewpoint to less than -100C. With new technology, we can now
remove a variety of contaminants from styrene, polyethylene, ethylene, light hydrocarbons and air. Aluminas are very
nonreactive adsorbents giving off low heats of adsorption. Surface areas and surface areas can be controlled during
manufacturing to allow for custom purification applications.
